The IB Primary Years Programme (IBPYP) is a transdisciplinary curriculum framework designed by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) for students aged 3 to 12. Focusing on the development of the whole child, the PYP prepares students to be active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and others.
At the heart of the curriculum are the IB Learner Profiles, which guide students toward becoming internationally-minded citizens. Unlike traditional teacher-led instruction, the PYP encourages inquiry-based learning through engaging activities and collaborative projects, building a solid foundation for the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).
The Transdisciplinary Framework
The PYP curriculum integrates six key subject areas: Language, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, The Arts, and Personal, Social, and Physical Education.
What sets the PYP apart from traditional curricula is itsTransdisciplinary Themes.
Rather than learning subjects in isolation, students explore these six "Units of Inquiry" (UOI) to understand how different disciplines connect to the real world:
1. Who We Are: Exploring the nature of the self, beliefs, values, and human relationships.
2. Where We Are in Place and Time: Investigating personal histories, geography, and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations.
3. How We Express Ourselves: Discovering the ways we reflect on and express feelings, ideas, and creativity.
4. How the World Works: Understanding the physical world, the impact of scientific advances, and the laws of nature.
5. How We Organize Ourselves: Examining the interconnectedness of human-made systems, communities, and organizations.
6. Sharing the Planet: Analyzing our rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and living things.
