The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a widely recognized and respected English language proficiency test for non-native English speakers. This test measures an individual's ability to read, write, listen, and speak English in real-life situations.
IELTS is accepted by over 10,000 institutions around the world, including universities, colleges and employers, making IELTS an important tool for those who want to study, work or live in an English-speaking country. IELTS is an English proficiency test similar to TOEFL.

IELTS test types

There are two types of IELTS tests: academic and general training:

  • Academic IELTS test: T is for individuals who wish to study at a higher education institution such as a university or college. This test measures an individual's ability to understand academic content and communicate effectively in an academic setting. AEI students prepare for this test as part of their college applications.

  • General training IELTS test: Suitable for people who wish to immigrate to an English-speaking country, or who wish to prove their English language proficiency for work or training. This exam measures an individual's ability to communicate in practical, everyday situations.

How many IELTS scores do students need?

The minimum IELTS score required for undergraduate entry varies by institution level and specific requirements. Normally, universities and colleges in English-speaking countries require that the total score of the IELTS comprehensive training test is not less than 6.0 or 6.5, and the score band is not less than 5.5. However, more competitive institutions may require higher scores, such as a minimum of 7.0 or 7.5. It is best to check with the specific institution you are interested in to determine their specific requirements.
