Digital SAT – Quick Start

Now the SAT is also digital! If you’re too busy to read our previous in-depth coverage, here’s a quick overview of what you need to know to keep you up to date:

  • Today's SAT is digital and much shorter than before. The paper version of the SAT takes 3 hours, but the new digital SAT is only 2 hours and 14 minutes.

  • International students took the digital SAT for the first time on March 11, 2023. All U.S. and international students will take the digital SAT in March 2024.

  • The test score is still 800 points for each section (reading and writing, mathematics), and the total score is still 1600 points. 1500 points is usually the highest 1% score.

  • The digital SAT still needs to be taken at school or at a designated testing location. Students need to bring their own device (laptop or other device) to the exam center. If a student does not have a suitable device, arrangements can be made to borrow it through CollegeBoard.

  • There are no changes to support measures for students. Students who need extra time can still complete the exam on a digital platform.

  • The Reading and Writing and Language sections of the paper-based test are now combined into a single section called "Reading and Writing." This part consists of two modules.

  • The math section has its own section and also has two modules. Math questions are still arranged in order of difficulty, just like the original paper exam.

  • A calculator is available at any time during the math section. The digital platform provides a built-in Desmos calculator that students can use. Additionally, students can bring their own calculator (it is still highly recommended)!

  • Digital exams are adaptive. This means that your performance on the first module will determine the difficulty of the second module (easier second module or harder second module).
